Estas imágenes forman parte de un proyecto que documenta pequeñas comunidades (1000 habitantes o menos) en el oeste canadiense. Con cambios demográficos – drenaje rural, crecimiento urbano– persistentes, muchos aseguran que la población se esta tornando en una pieza lateral redundante en un mundo en crecientemente ocupado de lo urbano. Este trabajo investiga cómo estas comunidades luchan por mantener su legado a pesar de la reducción de vitalidad en estos poblados.
Nota del autor: La importancia de estas imágenes es que no son del pasado sino del presente; un archivo visual que se enfoca en la conservación del legado, identidad y deterioro regional del oeste canadiense. Debemos considerar aquello que estamos a punto de olvidar y entender el pasado es crucial en el proceso de crear un sentido de identidad. Las personas buscan establecer vínculos con el pasado, y quizás esto aún sea posible en el oeste rural.
The images in this book are part of a project documenting small communities (1,000 inhabitants or less) in the Canadian West. As demographic changes – ‘rural drain, urban claim’ – persist, many would argue that the rural is becoming a redundant sidepiece in a world that is increasingly concerned with the urban. The project investigates how these rural communities struggle to hold onto their heritage despite the diminishing vitality of these towns.
Author’s Note: The significance of these images is that they are not images of an American past, but of a Canadian present, a visual account of the Canadian West stressing legacy retention, regional identity and decay. We must reflect on that which is near to being forgotten. Understanding the past is important in establishing a sense of self. People wish to be connected to the past, and perhaps this is something still obtainable in the rural West.

** Kyler Zeleny is a Canadian visual sociologist. He is interested in Found Images from family albums, conscious/unconscious construction of ‘deviant cultures’, alternative culture movements, and how this defines and influences social policies. His personal interests in photography, which is reflective of his rural upbringing relates to open space, landscape portraiture, and the archeology of rural decay. He received his bachelors in Political Science from the University of Alberta and his masters in Sociology at Goldsmiths College, London in Photography and Urban Cultures. He is a guest editor with the publishing house The Velvet Cell and is a member of the Association of Urban Photographers (AUP). His first monograph—Out West—was launch this summer with The Velvet Cell. Kyler currently lives in Toronto, Canada where he is a doctoral student in the joint York & Ryerson Communication and Culture program.
