Street Photography Portfolios

The Fotoensayos section receives photographic series that focus their attention on the unexpected, diverse and ordinary aspects of city life. Appealing to the visual language of street photography, this section tries to present the urban life in the way it is revealed each moment, in an explicit and direct way. The medium can be either analogue or digital photographic work, the main requisite is that is is located on a public or semi-public space (streets, malls, airports, service stations, museums, etc.) emphasizing the multiple relations and interactions between cities’ inhabitants and the built environment.

Specific requirements for publishing in this section are:

1. 10 to 15 color or b/w photographs presented in digital format (JPG, GIF, BMP or TIFF format) sized to 72 dpi. Biggest side up to 800 pixels.

2. Each portfolio must include: a brief introductory paragraph of an extension lower than 50 words, a concise CV of the author and technical data specifications that include: type of lens, camera and film used (if it applies).  The place and date of the shoot must be clearly stated, either in the introductory paragraph or in the caption.

3. We expect minimal digital intervention on shoots. In general, we consider acceptable: basic color adjustments, b/w conversion, balance and contrast modifications, noise despeckle, unsharp mask, etc.

4. Photographs including collage techniques, montage or digital superposition, or any modification that alters the iconic basic character of the original shoot, won’t be accepted.

Audiovisual essay

The Audiovisual essay arises from the belief that the city can be lived, dreamed and represented in multiple ways. Each media presents limitations as much as infinite possibilities of expression, and for that reason the starting point of the section is to use sounds and images as the key language to research the city. Given its reflexive and perceptual character, this section does not try to locate itself neither in traditional cinema, nor documental or visual art, but in the point where they all cross.
Specific requirements for publishing in this section are:

1. Work must be an original creation, or it must count with the adequate publishing rights and a written authorization of the authors.

2. The video must be presented in digital format (ASF, ASX, AVI, DIVX, DV, DVX, M4v, MOV, MP4, MPEG, MPG, QT, WMV, 3G2, 3GP, 3IVX and 3VX) We recommend h.264 as video codec and AAC for audio.

3. Dimensions must be 640x480 for regular videos and 1280x720 for high definition videos. Please note that videos on 1440x1080 won’t be exhibited in widescreen. For this purpose compress it to 1280x720.

4. Length between 1 and 10 min.

5. Every piece must include a written essay of 1000 words (maximum length), which might question, explain or contradict the issues developed in the audiovisual essay.

6. All authors must send a brief CV.

Instantáneas (urban chronicles)

The Instantáneas -or urban chronicles- publishes brief reflections about any city, whether they are real or imaginaries, using a variety of visual material like text, photography, collage, sketches and others. The work published in Instantáneas is varied. It can be contingent, historical, academical, subjective or personal reflection about particular cities. Narrations can be focused on specific landmarks, monuments or places, but also on those dark spots or anonymous corners that make every city alive.
Instantáneas usually has two authors: the one who writes the chronicle and the one who illustrate it (or vice-versa). For that reason, authors can contribute by:

A. Sending urban chronicles:

  1. They must be presented in accurate and precise English, Spanish or Portuguese.
  2. They must have an extension of  700 words (maximum length), including notes, title for images, etc.
  3. Instantaneas are brief reflections that do not contain bibliographical references or captions.
  4. Must send a brief CV.

Procedures

Articles:

The editorial process starts with the reception of the article by the editor, who consults with the editorial committee to determine if the article should go through the peer review process. The exclusion of incoming contributions at this stage will correspond only to discrepancies with the Journal editorial line.

If approved by the editorial committee, the article is send to a minimum of two peer referees of the Committee Peer Review. They decide if the article may be published in its original form, if it needs amendments or if it is rejected. If referees disagree on their judgment, a third referee is summoned to evaluate the article. This process takes a maximum of 10 weeks.

Articles approved with observations will be returned to the author for amendments. Rejected articles will be promptly informed. The time limit to notify authors about the status of their work is four months.
It is of the duty of the journal’s Director to determine which articles will be included in each issue.

Contribution per page

Due to high production costs, bifurcaciones asks authors to provide, through their research grants or their institution, a voluntary contribution per published page. This shall not be in any way a requirement for acceptance and publication of the paper, which will be given by its merits.
